Ubuntu XGL desktop, Damn…….
I am currently downloading something for ubuntu, which is along the same line as Hans* article about a cool desktop. see for yourself 
And it does exist, yeah now, today HERE!
it probably eats a bunch of resources, but damn, do not regret having migrated!!! 
will tell you how it worked for me

My modest graphic card (Nvidia TNT2) is apparently not enough for this thingy
It works on me dads pc though, but rather slow.
In brief, given its still in test mode, i wouldnt invest in a new Gcard just for that but it looked cool
